Leaving the Land of Lincoln With God I Cannot Fail

As an Illinoisian and a devoted Abraham Lincoln fan I have always been proud that Illinois’ nickname, and official state slogan is “The Land of Lincoln.” This gives tribute to Lincoln’s early political career in Springfield, Illinois where he lived and worked for over a quarter of a century. This is where his children were…

A Mission Call and A Move

It was with many different emotions racing through me that my husband Mark and I accepted an invitation/calling to serve a mission for our church – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I first felt surprised by this opportunity to serve and then felt excited for the chance it would give Mark and…

Life Comes Back Spring Never Skips Its Turn

Spring is officially here! You wouldn’t know it from looking out the window at the snow flurries here in Chicagoland, and yet, one thing I know for sure is that spring never skips its turn. This gives me great hope that rain will soon wash away winter and, blossom by blossom, the earth will miraculously…

You’ve Got It Wrong! Why We Need to Stop Blaming Gun Violence on Mental Health.

My husband has turned on the evening news. I come into the room and sit in the overstuffed navy chair. I pick up a magazine and settle in with a blanket, my attention going back and forth between a kitchen make-over and the latest headlines. The news commentator then turns to disturbing reports about gun…

Remembering An important ingredient for present happiness.

It’s February and its negative 4 degrees outside with snow coming steadily down. So, I decided what better time to stay inside and get a head start on spring cleaning my basement. Downstairs I found myself going through a box of photos. I came across a snapshot from a family trip 19 years ago…

It's Time

It's time to see depression as a real illness, to know it's not a lack of personal effort, it's not a lack of goodness. It is painful, dark, disabling and life threatening.

It’s time to be okay with darkness, to recognize its purpose, to embrace your journey, and to search for and welcome the light.

It’s time to fill the emptiness, to reach out to others, to know you are not alone, And to offer compassion to yourself as you would another.

It’s time to ignore that negative voice in your head, to let go of guilt and shame, to not take counsel from fear, and to place your trust in God.

It’s time to shed those tears, to see the heart space that pain has created for hope to spring up, faith to grow and love to be invited in.

It's time to say, "I matter," to see miracles, to rest, to run to forgive, to express gratitude. To choose joy, to praise life and to become the best you.
