When Going to Church Stinks

Church Can Be a Stinky Place “ I can’t go to church,” Carol said, “I smell like tobacco.” Her quick dismissal of my invitation surprised me. I looked at her puzzled. She did smell like tobacco, but I didn’t understand. “Carol, we miss you at church, I could come by and pick you up this…

Humor Heals – Laughter is the Best Medicine

My maiden name is Hoole, which rhymes with fool. So, when I was born on April 1st, many of my parents’ family members and friends encouraged my parents to be clever and name me April Hoole. I’m glad they showed a mature restraint and went with Elaine. Yet still, being born on April Fools’…

Before and After – Healing from Depression

Healing From Depression Healing from depression can be a lot like home renovation shows. I love watching HGTV and seeing homes renovated. The “before” and “after” scenes are amazing! And when I see the finished project, I let out gasps of astonishment! So, when my husband, Mark, and I purchased a 100-year-old house for a…

It's Time

It's time to see depression as a real illness, to know it's not a lack of personal effort, it's not a lack of goodness. It is painful, dark, disabling and life threatening.

It’s time to be okay with darkness, to recognize its purpose, to embrace your journey, and to search for and welcome the light.

It’s time to fill the emptiness, to reach out to others, to know you are not alone, And to offer compassion to yourself as you would another.

It’s time to ignore that negative voice in your head, to let go of guilt and shame, to not take counsel from fear, and to place your trust in God.

It’s time to shed those tears, to see the heart space that pain has created for hope to spring up, faith to grow and love to be invited in.

It's time to say, "I matter," to see miracles, to rest, to run to forgive, to express gratitude. To choose joy, to praise life and to become the best you.
